final blog
This quarter I learned a lot about the legalites and history concerning media and how it affects my everyday life. I was particularly interested in the public relation topic since I have thoughts of pursuing a possible career in that direction. Since I am not a journalism major, it was definitely interesting to be in a class that was filled with extremely passionate individuals and taught me different lessons that I will consider on my academic journey and in the outside world. As for the first amendment I always only considered it to be related to freedom of speech but can now say I have a whole new understanding of what the first amendment actually means especially when it came to my research paper.

Annotated Reference List
Three items for Annotated Reference List:
1.) Delaney, J. (2013). EMPLOYER USE OF FACEBOOK AND ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKS TO DISCRIMINATE
AGAINST APPLICANTS FOR EMPLOYMENT AND EMPLOYEES: AN ANALYSIS BALANCING THE RISKS OF
HAVING A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT AND THE NEED FOR PROTECTIVE LEGISLATION. Labor Law Journal,
64(2), 86-102. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/1406216018?accountid=38235
The article discusses the privacy or lack of privacy that Facebook offers users and how employers have used Facebook to screen applicants before they are interviewed or part of the interview process by asking the applicants to disclose personal login information. The article also focuses on current and proposed legislation intended to protect the privacy rights of the applicants. I will use the articles findings to recognize employer liability and current privacy laws that are issued and which vary state to state.
2.) Peterson, E. A. (2014). Business strategies for managing the legal risks of social media. Journal of
Management and Sustainability, 4(3), 96-101. Retrieved from
http://search.proquest.com/docview/1561139762?accountid=38235
This article discusses the recent growth of social media which has changed interactions between personal, business, and legal spheres of society. Legal scholars and practitioners are increasingly examining the effects of social media on organizational strategy, with particular attention being paid to social media's involvement in the struggle between the negligent hiring theory and anti-discrimination laws. I will use the articles findings to determine discrimination and how do employers avoid falling into that category.
3.) Siedsma, Andrea. "Are Background Checks on Web Posts Too Much Information?" Workforce Management
91.1 (2012): 10. Web. 17 Nov. 2014. Retrieved from http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?
direct=true&db=bsh&AN=70534954&site=ehost-live
The article reports on the use of social media activity for employment background checks which has also raised concerns over privacy and legality. Human resources industry leaders and legal experts regards that websites play a vital role in hiring process to check any records, fit for the organization, connection with key people in the field. The article also states that 7 out of 10 U.S. hiring managers reject candidates based on online information. This reference will be great to compare to other recent surveys and if this still applies to current laws regarding privacy and legality.

Topic Ideas
- Topic 1: Limits to advertising (junk) food to adults and not just children. You constantly hear that children should be limited on how much unhealthy food they are consuming outside of their home but what about adults? Should adults have a limit on what they are consuming on a regular basis? What fast food chains have restrictions on certain food items? Should advertisers be blocked or limited on media outlets? Should there be a ban on food to prevent obesity among adults?
- Topic 2: Should social media be used against you? What regulations are in place allowing jobs to check your facebook etc and to determine whether they should hire you based on your postings. Does your social media site determine who you are as a person? Can social media be used against you in a court of law?
- Topic 3: The Cloud. Where does it all go and to what purpose? Do we really have privacy? Is our data being sold to advertisers?

Books
I didn't realize how complicated writing this blog would be because I've come to realize that out of the millions of books that I have read, the majority of those books are not influential whatsoever. However, the three books I've read that have made an impact on me were:
A good friend of mine recommended this book to me one day and told me I would appreciate the wisdom and depth the characters have to offer. Sure enough, I did. This book made me feel sad, happy, regretful but positive all at the same time about life and life's lessons. So many times we go through life forgetting the most important things that may or may not be right in front of us. Life is short and time is precious, so at the end of this book it made me realize that certain grudges or lost connections can be easily fixed. Definitely an eye opener!
"Life is about the journey not the destination." Pretty much this books motto and I truly believe in that saying. The Alchemist is about a shepherd who leaves his whole life behind to follow his dream to find treasure in Egypt. Except on his journey he realizes that the treasure is what he learns on the journey instead of the treasure he eventually finds. This book was amazing to me that no matter what set backs you may face along your journey you have to keep going and you will eventually succeed.
3. The Da Vinci Code by Robert Langdon

This book was the most exciting novel that brought up debatable subjects regarding religion. The Da Vinci code offered mystery, action, and hit close to home regarding my catholic upbringing. Who was Jesus married too? and what role did Mary Magdalene really play in the bible? Also talks about the holy grail. Definitely a debatable subject and great book to read!

Media Autobiography
Hi, my name is Juliet Robles and I am a Communications major at De Anza College with the goal to transfer to San Jose State University by Fall of 2015. Since I plan to work for a company in public relations, it is important for me to familiarize myself and be able to utilize the different forms of media outlets around me.
Currently my relationship with the following Media:
Currently my relationship with the following Media:
- Books: I love books. I grew up loving books whether they were fiction or non-fiction, important or unimportant. I love the idea of picking up an actual book and feeling the weight of it in my hands while I flip page after page lost in another world that is far from my current reality. Or the smell of books as you enter a bookstore or library. ahhh.. heaven, I tell you. But, now and days you have books available through Kindle or apps that allow you to read a book via your smart phone. Nope. It is just not the same for me. My younger sister recently purchased a Kindle from Barnes and Nobles and raves about it. Maybe I'm just old fashion but it'll be interesting to see how far these electronic books will take off and if they'll take over the form of actual print books.
- Newspaper/News: I didn't grow up with the Newspaper, really. It was rare if I saw my parents read the paper at breakfast or any time of the day. I think the idea of the paper is brilliant but I'm used to going online to the San Jose Mercury news and New York Times and selecting which topics I'm interested in.
- Magazines: I've had a lot of interaction with magazines from my teens years up until now. Magazines are definitely geared to ones interest and come in a broad range of categories. I personally gravitated to woman's fashion, fitness, and food magazines such as Shape Magazine, Lucky, and my current obsession- Bon Appetit Magazine.
- Movies: I think movies are the perfect past time. I honestly wish I could take time to watch more movies and head to the theater but I find that I rarely do so and if I do I tend to fall asleep.. a lot. I also gravitate towards my Netflix account 95% of the time, although I wish they had a wider selection on movies.
- Audio: Music has been the biggest form of media growing up and even till today. From my mom and dads music, to my own music, while I'm cleaning, showering, getting dressed, driving, sitting, doing nothing, to relaxing or pumping myself up to go dance the night away. Even while I'm eating out at a restaurant or shopping at the mall- audio is everywhere. Especially if its my preference in music.
- Radio: The only time I listen to the radio is when I'm in my car driving somewhere. Most of the time I tend to connect my iPhone to my my adapter and play my ipod list or Pandora. Before the ipod, I played alot of my CD's while driving because it's a direct play list of the music you want to hear instead of the radio selecting songs or recordings for you to listen to. Also, you don't have to deal with commercials except I know Pandora does include brief commercials but they do have a free commercial version if you pay for it.
- Internet: Social Media will be the death of me. I'm constantly on my iPhone checking my Instagram feed the most. Any break I take, I revert to my social media accounts as if something new happened within the last 10 minutes that I looked. I no longer have Facebook, which is great because I can't imagine having that on my phone either. Aside from social media, I use the internet the most, since I was 13 years old. There wasn't much to do back then online except email and instant messaging with AOL. Searching the web has expanded to unbelievable heights today, allowing almost any type of interaction to occur. With that being said, I believe that we can utilize the internet and social media in a positive light and be able to inform the younger generation about making a difference in their society by just being aware of what is going on around them on an everyday basis.
