Media Autobiography

Hi, my name is Juliet Robles and I am a Communications major at De Anza College with the goal to transfer to San Jose State University by Fall of 2015. Since I plan to work for a company in public relations, it is important for me to familiarize myself  and be able to utilize the different forms of media outlets around me.

Currently my relationship with the following Media:

  • Books: I love books. I grew up loving books whether they were fiction or non-fiction, important or unimportant. I love the idea of  picking up an actual book and feeling the weight of it in my hands while I flip page after page lost in another world that is far from my current reality. Or the smell of books as you enter a bookstore or library. ahhh.. heaven, I tell you. But, now and days you have books available through Kindle or apps that allow you to read a book via your smart phone. Nope. It is just not the same for me. My younger sister recently purchased a Kindle from Barnes and Nobles and raves about it. Maybe I'm just old fashion but it'll be interesting to see how far these electronic books will take off and if they'll take over the form of actual print books.
  • Newspaper/News: I didn't grow up with the Newspaper, really. It was rare if I saw my parents read the paper at breakfast or any time of the day. I think the idea of the paper is brilliant but I'm used to going online to the San Jose Mercury news and New York Times and selecting which topics I'm interested in.
  • Magazines: I've had a lot of interaction with magazines from my teens years up until now. Magazines are definitely geared to ones interest and come in a broad range of categories. I personally gravitated to woman's fashion, fitness, and food magazines such as Shape Magazine, Lucky, and my current obsession- Bon Appetit Magazine.
  • Movies: I think movies are the perfect past time. I honestly wish I could take time to watch more movies and head to the theater but I find that I rarely do so and if I do I tend to fall asleep.. a lot. I also gravitate towards my Netflix account 95% of the time, although I wish they had a wider selection on movies.
  • Audio: Music has been the biggest form of media growing up and even till today. From my mom and dads music, to my own music, while I'm cleaning, showering, getting dressed, driving, sitting, doing nothing, to relaxing or pumping myself up to go dance the night away. Even while I'm eating out at a restaurant or shopping at the mall- audio is everywhere. Especially if its my preference in music.
  • Radio: The only time I listen to the radio is when I'm in my car driving somewhere. Most of the time I tend to connect my iPhone to my my adapter and play my ipod list or Pandora. Before the ipod, I played alot of my CD's while driving because it's a direct play list of the music you want to hear instead of the radio selecting songs or recordings for you to listen to. Also, you don't have to deal with commercials except I know Pandora does include brief commercials but they do have a free commercial version if you pay for it.
  • Internet: Social Media will be the death of me. I'm constantly on my iPhone checking my Instagram feed the most. Any break I take, I revert to my social media accounts as if something new happened within the last 10 minutes that I looked. I no longer have Facebook, which is great because I can't imagine having that on my phone either. Aside from social media, I use the internet the most, since I was 13 years old. There wasn't much to do back then online except email and instant messaging with AOL. Searching the web has expanded to unbelievable heights today, allowing almost any type of interaction to occur. With that being said, I believe that we can utilize the internet and social media in a positive light and be able to inform the younger generation about making a difference in their society by just being aware of what is going on around them on an everyday basis.
